Umbra is done!

In this painting I placed an under layer of India Ink writing* in a vertical direction, contrasted with the horizontal layering of color. Color is dominant, but the writing is perceived throughout.

*The writing does not form words or meaning.  Rather it is what we do as children before we learn to write and try to imitate what we think is writing...scribbling?

Have been working steadily on Umbra. An unusual color palette for me.

The original color palette triangles have an india ink-"drawn" or "written" under layer placed in a vertical direction. That is countered by the horizontal direction of color. The india ink under layer emerges unexpectedly.

Okay.  While creating this painting I have been debating about the title.  At first it was Yellow/Shade, but that was not working.  Then, Yellow/Umbra, and that too didn't work for me. So now the new title is Umbra.  I think this works.  Titles for my paintings can be an agonizing process.  Usually a title or a sense of a title germinates as a painting is created.

Even though Umbra has a yellow cast to it, for me, it is full of shadows. The color yellow does not suggest shadow, quite the opposite; but for me, Umbra has an underside or interior that is cast in darkness.

During the process of creating a painting, I struggle with the randomness and purposeful placement of colors.  Sometimes a color or pattern emerges and I strive to find a way to expand on that theme looking for these patterns in the "palette-triangles" that form each painting.

Here are details of a new painting that I am working on. The color in this painting is a departure from the blues of the Nocturnes I am usually drawn to.

I began experimenting with an under-layer of "writing" in Nocturne at Five (the painting created before this one). The "writing" is a counter point to the direction of color application.

Here are two details of the new painting I am working on.  A painting starts with the initial creation of palette-triangles to determine color, texture, and movement. Palette-triangles are created throughout the process, and are defined by the direction of the painting, conversely, new palette-triangles further define the painting -- a process of discovery and surprise.

Enigma in Green just sold! This painting is composed of wonderful greens, blue-greens, touches of deep pink, with an overall iridescence. As a horizontal, it tells a color narrative.

Last week I finished Composition. Yellow. Blue. On the left is the space for the last two triangles. And below, the last two triangles have been fit into place.

The next phase is to spray the two panels with many layers of fixative and then many layers of a U.V. protective.
